Internet Sensation And Meme Legend Grumpy Cat Dies Aged 7

Grumpy Cat shot to fame when memes of the frowning cat with the caption, "I once had fun, it was awful" spawned all over the internet

Internet sensation and meme Grumpy Cat has passed away at the age of 7, announced her caretakers Tabatha Bundesen, her brother Bryan Bundesen and daughter Crystal Bundesen. Grumpy Cat hailed from Morristown, Arizona and became an internet sensation when Bryan posted a picture of the cat, going by the name Tardar Sauce on Reddit. People shared pictures of the cat, with parodies and memes in no time and in under 48 hours, Grumpy Cat had established himself as an internet legend, People reported.



The news of Grumpy Cat’s death was announced on its official Twitter account with the message: We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat. Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world — even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.




Grumpy Cat has close to 12.4 million followers across social media. The post of the cat’s demise was posted with the caption: Some days are grumpier than others.



Grumpy Cat would also go onto become a marketing phenomenon nabbing commercials with Friskies and Honey Nut Cheerios. Grumpy Cat also had its own T-shirts, plush toys, stickers, paper doll sets, greeting cards, comic books, and video game apps. Grumpy’s manager Ben Lashes made the claim that the cat has generated revenue in excess of $100million. "This is a seven-figure cat, for sure,” said Ben Lashes as per a report by Hollywood Reporter.

The Grumpy cat even enabled her caretaker Tabatha Bundesen, 28, to quit her job as a Red Lobster waitress. Asked about the exposure, Bryan said, "It's been great for our family."



Grumpy Cat was also immortalized with her infamous frown at the Madame Tussauds museum. When asked to explain the popularity of the cat, Tabatha told USA today, in 2014, that “Misery loves company. People feel if Grumpy’s having a bad day, too, they can use her as a way to communicate their negative feelings.”



The internet chose to say farewell to the famous cat with memes flooding the internet. A fitting farewell indeed. With the internet sensation gone, we’re all a little grumpy.
